Why do the Irish ignore their domestic league and follow English clubs?

I'm not buying the whole excuse that because their league is 'cack', so is Scottish and other countries leagues in Europe but they all follow their own clubs, there has to be more to it, Dublin is big city that could support a bottom half Prem side so what drives the paddy day trippers over in their droves?
